This instrument, a vihuela or guitar, built in Lisbon in 1581 by Belchior Dias, is held in the collection of the Royal College of Music, London, inventory number RCM0171. With an outline tht shows clear evidence of having been designed using proportional geometry, it is a small instrument, waisted with the upper bouts narrower than the lower bouts.

There is debate over whether this is actually a vihuela, but I am drawn to the body shape and may scale it up to the G-pitched instrument we are after.

The vihuela in the Austin-Marie Collection is a reproduction by acclaimed British luthier, Alexander Batov, based on an instrument built in 1581 by Belchoir Dias of Lisbon. The Dias vihuela is housed in the Royal College of Music, London and often referred to as a guitarra.

An object of elegant simplicity, this vihuela (or guitar) is one of the few Iberian plucked instruments surviving from the sixteenth century, built in Lisbon in 1581 by Belchior Dias. It is the epitome of grace and elegance in Renaissance instrument building, but in recent times it has also been the centre of considerable controversy.

This particular vihuela — the predecessor of modern guitars — created by Belchior Diaz is widely considered the oldest guitar in the world. It dates back to around 1590, has 10 strings, and instead of regular metal frets, its ligatures are tied like those found on a lute.
