Interesting question - it made me think of Belgian art nouveau and its connections to the Belgian Congo. When I was living in Brussels I noticed quite a few statues relating to Belgian colonialism, but also references to Congo in Art Nouveau - for example African objects statues of African people and on Art Nouveau house facades.
