Roughly 325 are classified as native freshwater species, and another approximately 100 as native marine species. The state is home to sixteen river systems in three major drainages.

Anthropogenic activity has significantly compromised many of its favored habitats, with dams blocking some vital spawning routes and polluting natural waters.

Temperate Bass - saltwater striped, white, and yellow bass and any hybrids thereof. Pickerel - chain, redfin, and grass pickerel. Perch - sauger (jack), walleye, and yellow perch. Trout - rainbow trout.

Alligator Gar, Atractosteus spatula, is the largest freshwater fish species in both length and weight in Alabama. This species is mostly found in the Mobile delta but is also found the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers.

From mountain streams in the Appalachian foothills, to the Tennessee River system, to the estuaries of the Mobile basin, Alabama is home to 450 species of fish, more than anywhere else in North America. Several species are unique to Alabama, including the Alabama cavefish, which can only be found in a single cave in Lauderdale County.
