If they wanted someone to portray real human tragedy as part of the villain arch, Mikael Persbrandt was a really good choice. Def brings some gravitas, not too dissimilar to Stellan Skarsgard in Dune, and def willing to go all the way to explore a deranged character.

Persbrandt is well known for his role as the hardboiled police inspector Gunvald Larsson, in the Beck series of films. He won the Guldbagge Award for Best Actor in a leading role twice, the first in 2009 for Everlasting Moments and the second in 2014 for Nobody Owns Me .
