Dené–Caucasian is a discredited language family proposal that includes widely-separated language groups spoken in the Northern Hemisphere: Sino-Tibetan languages, Yeniseian languages and Burushaski in Asia; Na-Dené languages in North America; as well as Vasconic languages (including Basque) and North Caucasian languages from Europe.

This collaborative project deals with the development and testing of the Dene-Caucasian (also called Sino-Caucasian) hypothesis on a deep genetic connection between certain language families and language "isolates" of Eurasia and North America.

INTRODUCTION The idea of the Dene-Caucasian (hereafter DC) macrofamily results from the generalization of several theories. The key hypothesis, Sino-Caucasian in its modern version, was formulated by S. A. Starostin (1984), who adduced facts indicating deep affinity of North Caucasian with Yeniseian and Sino-Tibetan.

The Dene-Caucasian (or Sino-Caucasian) hypothesis is a relatively young proposal, though it has deep roots in several earlier theories, as far back as the 1850s, that attempted to genetically connect (North) Caucasian languages with the Yeniseian and/or Sino-Tibetan language families.

Ruhlen explains the situation as the result of an early Dene-Caucasian diaspora, followed by a later Eurasiatic (Indo-European + Uralic + Altaic, etc.) expansion that absorbed some Dene-Caucasian speakers, and forced others into refuge areas where their original languages persisted. I find this scenario very plausible.
