A Ugandan health official says a nurse in the capital, Kampala, has died of Ebola, in the first recorded fatality since the country's last outbreak ended in 2023.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed an outbreak of the Sudan virus disease (SVD) in Uganda. SVD belongs to the same genus as the fatal Ebola virus disease. The infectious haemorrhagic fever is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids and tissue

In its last outbreak, more than two years ago, Uganda saw 164 cases and 55 confirmed deaths from Ebola. Uganda announced Thursday that a nurse, 32, had died of Ebola in the capital, Kampala, amid a new outbreak of the deadly virus there — the first in two years.
